Methyl Ergometrine acts primarily by stimulating -adrenergic, serotonergic (5HT2), and dopamine receptors on the uterine smooth muscle. This widespread stimulation induces strong, tonic, and sustained uterine contractions, which are key for rapid uterine involution (shrinking back to normal size) and the mechanical closure of blood vessels. This powerful action helps to expel retained fetal membranes and control postpartum hemorrhage (bleeding).
