Mechanism of Action

Itraconazole is a triazole antifungal agent. It functions by inhibiting CYP3A -mediated synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of the fungal cell membrane. This inhibition leads to defective cell membranes, increased permeability, and eventual cellular leakage, resulting in fungistatic or fungicidal activity. Itraconazole exhibits high lipophilicity and concentrates well in keratinized tissues, making it highly effective against dermatophytes and yeasts.
