Composition

Each sachet contains:
lsometamidium Chloride Hydrochloride. 1 gm

Indications

Curative treatment of active Trypanosomiasis (e.g., Surra, Nagana).
Long-term prophylactic protection against Trypanosomiasis in endemic zones.
Used for animals being moved into or through high-risk tsetse fly areas.
Management of anemia and systemic debility caused by trypanosomal infections.

Mechanism of Action

Isometamidium is a cationic trypanocide that works by strongly binding to the DNA of the Trypanosoma parasite. It primarily targets the parasite's kinetoplast DNA, intercalating into its structure. This interference halts the replication and transcription processes essential for the parasite's division and survival, leading to rapid parasite death. The compound's characteristic slow release from the injection site and binding to tissue provide a sustained concentration in the bloodstream, conferring prophylactic (preventative) immunity for several months.

Usage & Recommendation

Cattle (Curative): 0.25 - 0.5 mg/kg body weight

Typically dissolved in 20 ml of sterile water per 1 gm sachet to make a 5% w/v solution.
