The resulting acute decline in progesterone concentration relieves the negative feedback on the hypothalamus and pituitary. This hormonal shift facilitates the release of gonadotropins, allowing dominant follicles to mature, leading predictably to the onset of estrus (heat) and subsequent ovulation within days.
