Closantel belongs to the salicylanilide class and primarily acts by uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation within the parasite's mitochondria. This process disrupts the production of Adenosine Triphosphate (), the essential energy molecule. Since Closantel selectively concentrates in the blood, it is particularly effective against blood-ssucking parasites (like liver flukes, bottle worms, and some screw-worms) that directly ingest the host's blood, leading rapidly to metabolic failure, paralysis, and death.
